From Knight to Clergy

Gonzalo Garcia’s transition from knighthood to the church was a significant move that reshaped the Carvajal family. The Carvajal’s primarily operated for the kingdom as knights and Gonzalo’s change of identity from military entrepreneur to pursuing the livelihood of a clergyman left his father disappointed. The Carvajal’s, when compared to other military families, had lacked funding and enough credibility to gain much more power compared to other families of similar placement in the hierarchy. This shift from a poor protective warrior family to a family primarily of faith opened a door that allowed them to gain the trust of both the clergy as well as the King.
